LINQ to SQL is on one of the many variations of LINQ focused on querying SQL Server databases.  I would recommend that anyone trying to understand LINQ go through this FREE Virtual Lab and its examples, along with anything that you can find on LINQ to Objects as the baseline for understanding how to program in LINQ.

Here’s an overview of the training (from the site):

After completing this lab, you will be better able to use LINQ to SQL to implement a resource access layer that interacts with an existing Microsoft SQL Server database, use the LINQ to SQL Designer to create LINQ to SQL entity classes and associations (relationships) based on tables in a database, manage the DataContext and how to use where clauses, perform joins, order the results, and handle conflict detection.
